Learning

We are about sharing information, and providing what everyone needs to know to have a successful lifetime relationship with their animal. This list is not a random selection, rather a handpicked list of pages written by some of the best animal handlers in the world in my opinion.

About Cheatham Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.)

In March of 1997, Cheatham County was struck by major flooding and considered a National Disaster Area. A small group of citizens, armed with good food and warm blankets, met at the Red Cross shelter a family with a dog ... a pregnant German Shepherd named Sheba. Because the dog was not allowed into the shelter, the dad usually slept in a nearby covered car wash, in the cold rain, with his pet. Sheba and her family soon found warm, dry shelter with the volunteers, and the Cheatham County Animal Awareness Foundation (CCAAF) was born. CCAAF earned its 501(c)3 nonprofit qualification with the IRS by June of that year.

The CCAAF is a non-profit, no-kill, all volunteer network for abandoned, neglected and unwanted pets. The need for services for these animals is extremely pronounced since Cheatham Co. currently has no municipal animal control services and no shelter in which to house animals. In May of 2003, the volunteer organization's working name was changed to Cheatham Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.) to better represent our volunteer rescuers, foster parents and adoption counselors.

Since 1997, 1350 pets have been rescued and placed into their "forever" homes through the efforts of our organization. C.A.R.E volunteers generously foster the pets until permanent homes are found. All the animals in our care have been veterinary-checked and are up-to-date on vaccinations.

ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS

In every aspect of life there are those who have a special need to make themselves feel good. As some love their animals, others require attention, and therefore we have here conflicting groups of ideas.

Animal lovers are concerned with the welfare and well being of animals whereas animal rights activists are only concerned about themselves, getting their way at all costs, and getting attention at all costs. If they are to be appeased, we will open the door to a vast number of problems unforeseen.

As man evolved he became a carnivore. He learned that beast could aid him in his labors. The horse became transport, the Ox became freight, as did the Mule, and many others.

On a daily basis we breed and nurture and farm, and care for a wide variety of animals for many reasons. Food, Sport, and companionship are the biggest reasons. As a result, many animals are victims of poor care, abuse, and misfortune as controls of quality and care are overlooked. Man neglects to take responsibility for his carelessness, and as a result, welfare is being placed second to radical bans by radical people.

There may be some valid things to consider as spoken by these “overly outspokens”, however to listen to their entire perspective is likely a waste of the world’s time and patience. To outlaw the absolute association of man and beast in every sense is  an impossible task. Whoever would control, police, enforce or judge these bans?

HYPOCRITS

PETA

As I listened to their mumble jumble garbage on the streets of Nashville Tn., I noticed that one such expert mouthpiece wore leather shoes. He sipped coffee with cream, and the woman with him wore a wool sweater.

While I listened to their plight to stop cattle ranchers, and watched as people stared at the naked woman on the barb-q as a ploy to make a point? I heard one PETA supporter lash out at a man in a fake fur lined hat. He took it off to show this idiot, but he refused to admit his mistaken perception as they all think they are teachers, leaders, Gods of some sort?

PETA refused to help the Colorado ranchers recently after a storm stranded thousands of cattle in suffering conditions. Their logic to this suffering was  “ why save them just to eat them” .

What did PETA do after the Gulf Coast storms? Did they care? No. As their ideas involve stopping pet ownership altogether.

Extreme, don’t you think? An organization that generates billions on false pretenses.

Well it appears the truth will finally prevail.

PETA Animal Cruelty trial: the fallout continues

PETA's successes with a North Carolina jury haven't translated well into the court of public opinion. As we wrote in yesterday's Norfolk (VA) Virginian-Pilot, the fact that PETA unapologetically kills healthy cats and dogs has done irrevocable damage to the group's reputation:

Reasonable people can agree that if the whole trial was a sham, and if the jury made the right decision (and that's a big "if"), it's hard to see the group as anything but hopelessly hypocritical in light of the testimony from PETA's employees...

Killing of animals, whatever the circumstances, is not something we've come to expect from PETA. Yet in front of a judge and jury this month, PETA's defense lawyer argued that animals Hinkle injected with a lethal drug were "PETA's property, and she had the absolute legal authority" to do it.

Remember that the next time PETA argues that ranchers, restaurants or clothiers don't have that same legal authority.

The Virginian-Pilot also ran a response piece from Daphna Nachminovitch, who leads PETA's ironically named "Rescue Department." ("Rescuing" pets from what? Oxygen over-consumption?) Nachminovitch basically argued that PETA staffers were doing the animals they killed a favor because the conditions in North Carolina shelters are so bad.

You would expect an animal "rights" group to at least make a good faith effort to find "rescued" pets homes before killing them. But in North Carolina, PETA's workers didn't even wait to get out of the parking lot before they "put down" dozens of perfectly healthy and adoptable animals. And very little of PETA's $25 million dollar budget goes towards pet adoption programs. So while PETA may be helping animals by taking them out of substandard shelters, what it does to them clearly violates the principle of animal "rights" as it is commonly understood.

That message has gotten through to at least one long-time PETA donor. Yesterday, animal activist Brennan Browne -- a PETA "supporter and defender since 1980" -- announced on an animal rights mailing list that he's removing PETA as the beneficiary of his $3 million life insurance policy because, in his words:

It turns my stomach to think I've been giving 26 years of support to an organization that has been unceremoniously killing and trashing innocents by the thousands.
